Piggy Bank Design Challenge
Piggy Bank Design Challenge
Piggy Bank Design Challenge
An Engineering Design Challenge for Kindergartners. Background:
We have been studying money and have also talked about how it is important to save money in order to buy wants.
Challenge:
Design and make a bank that can hold money that you save.
Criteria:
• You must use some recycled material.
• The bank must hold money.
• Money should be able to be taken out of the bank.
• It should have nickel and pennies that total more than 5 cents and less than 10 cents.
• Your bank must depict something other than a pig.
Materials:
various, clean, recycled materials
construction paper
tape
glue
Tools:
scissors
markers
crayons
stapler *(at teacher’s discretion)
I. Students research types of piggy banks using images found by teacher.
II. Next, partners draw a blueprint of their piggy bank plan. The building of the piggy bank took place in the classroom and teacher provided various recycled materials.
III. When completed, students use iPads to photograph their designs.
IV. With the teacher, students count money out from their coin collection. They have to have one nickel, some pennies and had to be more than 5¢ but less than 10¢.
V. Students conduct a “Museum Walk” of their banks. Each group presents their bank to the class. Students can ask questions and make comments.
VI. By the next day, the teacher will have her computer logged into her VoiceThread account, and have had already uploaded the student photos.
VI. As a group, the teacher will call partners up to comment on their project on the Voice Thread.

Essential questions: What kinds of different piggy banks are out there? What do we use piggy banks for? Why is it important to have a piggy bank? How do different piggy banks work? How can yo put money in one? How can you get money out of one? What different coin combinations make between 5¢ and 10¢?
Kindergarten/First Grade
Based on the research we did looking at images of various banks, students created different ways in which to deposit money into their banks. They were inspired by old fashioned mechanical piggy banks to make things such as “money slides” and belly buttons for the piggy banks’ slots. This showed an understanding of mechanical piggy banks as well as humorous piggy banks.
