Math Apps Get You Ready for Common Core
Three apps to help K-12 math teachers get started with teaching Common Core
Like it or not, it looks like Common Core is here to stay. Nearly every state has adopted the Common Core State Standards Initiative— a clear, consistent framework for K-12 Mathematics and Language Arts education. The question is, are you ready for Common Core?
Fortunately for math teachers, there are a number of iPad applications that make it easier to teach with Common Core. Here’s a list of our top three favorite apps to help prepare you to implement Common Core Standards into your curriculum.
Common Core State Standards (CCSS)
Cost: Free
Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 4.0 or later.
No list of quintessential apps for Common Core would be complete without the Common Core State Standards app from Mastery Connect. A must-have app for teachers, students, and parents, the CCSS app allows you to quickly search through Common Core Standards for both Mathematics and Language Arts. Using the app, teachers can search through standards by grade, subject, and subject level (domain/cluster). No need to write down all the standards on your chalkboard. You can download the Android app here and get the iOS app here.
Sushi Monster
Cost: Free
Requirements: Compatible with iPad. Requires iOS 4.0 or later.
Common Core Standard(s): Extend fact knowledge to support strategic reasoning and computational flexibility in addition and multiplication.
What do you get when you combine your favorite sushi rolls with math problems? Sushi Monster – a fun, free game from Scholastic that your students can play to practice and extend math fact fluency. During the game, the “Sushi Monster Chef” serves up plates of numbers (with a side dish of sushi) that challenge how your students understand math facts. Players are required to think backwards to select the correct combination of numbers that equal the target sum or product. With each correct answer, students will earn points, stars, and trophies, unlocking new levels in the game. They will also satisfy the Sushi Monster’s craving for raw fish!
